How to be a Better Customer: A Math Problem
Sally, Tanner and Regina go out to lunch. The bill arrives and the total is $43.22. They decide to split the bill three ways. They each owe $14.40 without tip. Sally and Tanner each put $17.00 in the checkbook, and proudly announce “This is what I owe, plus tip!.” Regina doesn’t have cash and puts her debit card in the checkbook along with the $34.00 from her table mates. They tell their server to subtract the cash and put the remainder on the card. Regina’s Hello Kitty debit card is charged for $9.22. How much does Regina leave for a tip?
In a perfect world, Regina would leave $8 (a 20% tip).
In the real world, Regina leaves maybe $3, which is less than a 10% tip. She thinks she did a good job. She is an idiot.
This shit happens all the time. When you tell your server to subtract the cash and put the remainder on a credit card please make sure that they are still being tipped. This responsibility usually falls on the person who is paying by credit card.
Regina should leave $8 because it will make all parties equal in payment.
Don’t be an asshole next time you go out to lunch with your friends.
